After considerable debate, three of the six frigates were authorized to be completed: United States, Constitution and Constellation. However, the first naval vessel to sail was USS Ganges, on May 24, 1798.
When India became a republic on 26 January 1950, the Royal prefix was dropped and the name Indian Navy was officially adopted. The prefix for naval vessels was changed from His Majesty’s Indian Ship (HMIS) to Indian Naval Ship (INS).

In 1674, he laid the foundation of the Maratha Empire in Western India. He is also known as the Father of Indian Navy. Shivaji demonstrated great skill in creating his military organisation . He built a strong naval presence across the coast of Konkan and Goa to protect sea trade.
Is INS Vikrant still alive?
INS Vikrant (R11), a British-built aircraft carrier which was in service from 1961 to 1997, operated as a museum ship from 2002 to 2012 and was scrapped in 2014-15.
When was the first ship built in India?
The foundation stone for the shipyard was laid by Dr. Rajendra Prasad on 21 June 1941, who was at that time the acting Congress President. The first ship to be constructed fully in India after independence was built at the Scindia Shipyard and named Jal Usha.
The Achaemenid Empire, also known as the Persian Empire, had primarily a land based military but around 5th century BC, at the time of Cambyses II, the Empire started to develop a navy to allow for expansion. Their first ships were built by Phoenicians in their shipyards.
Created by Congress in April 1798, the Department of the Navy has its earliest roots in the Continental navy formed in 1775 by General George Washington to defend the American colonies from British attack.
